Dear Prolife Friends,

For the awakening of hearts and minds to the dignity of all pre-born human life, our El Cajon 40 Days for Life prayer teams will be completing an accumulative total of "40 Hours of Adoration", in front of the Blessed Sacrament, during the week of September 16th through 22nd.  Below are different locations where you can go and pray this way. You may already have the ability to pray this way at your parish, we only ask that you let us know where, what date, and how much the time you will be praying. We are keeping track to assure we reach our accumulative goal of 40 hours.

Please keep in mind the sole intent of our prayers will be for a successful 40 Days for Life Fall campaign that ends abortion in El Cajon, but always in accordance with God's Will.

Thank you for praying with us. We are hoping this little "extra" prayer and sacrifice we make before we begin our 40 Days for Life campaign on September 25th will bring us ever closer to God's presence within us and bring about His Graces to free women from the horrendous affects that abortion has on their lives and souls, and in our society as a whole.
Come Holy Spirit, Come. Blessed Mother, pray with us, through us and for all.

God Bless you,
Your 40 Days for Life El Cajon Team

Fwd: Trump administration's gag rule is dangerous and unethical! (signature needed)

Well this is an unexpected email.  I guess they don't know me.

---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: Planned Parenthood via Daily Kos <campaigns@dailykos.com>
Date: Sun, Dec 30, 2018 at 3:02 PM
Subject: Trump administration's gag rule is dangerous and unethical! (signature needed)
To: <rt4rtl@gmail.com>

Robert,

The Trump administration's dangerous gag rule could block patients around the country from getting the vital reproductive health care they need. It would interfere with the relationship between doctors and their patients -- all because the Trump administration wants to restrict the private decisions people make with their doctors.

Planned Parenthood flooded the Department of Health and Human Services with official comments, which has slowed down this rule already -- but they haven't gotten your signature yet, Robert. So we're sending this as a reminder that we need your help.

Add your name to voice your opposition to this dangerous rule and help Planned Parenthood protect reproductive care for MILLIONS! >>

Sincerely,
Dr. Leana Wen, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America

Now more than ever, we need your voice!

Planned Parenthood supporters submitted hundreds of thousands of comments urging the Trump-Pence administration not to implement its dangerous gag rule — but the rule could be officially released any day now!

Sign now to tell the Trump administration that you won't back down to help to protect reproductive health and rights in this country! >>

SIGN NOW >>

Robert,

The Trump administration's gag rule will put access to care and information at risk for millions of people, and he is planning to release it any moment now. That means that people who otherwise couldn't afford it will lose access to free or low cost reproductive health care — and we need your help.

Robert, in moments of crisis like this, we count on supporters like you to step up for the millions of patients who turn to Planned Parenthood health centers for quality, nonjudgmental health care every day.

Add your name now to let the administration know that you stand with Planned Parenthood! >>

ADD YOUR NAME

There's no question that this rule is dangerous. Millions of Title X patients — over 40 percent of whom are patients at Planned Parenthood health centers — rely on the program for quality, affordable birth control and other preventive care. The American Medical Association has said this gag rule will "dangerously interfere with the patient-physician relationship ... and jeopardize public health" — and thousands of doctors, nurses, and health care providers have signed a pledge saying that the gag rule is unethical and will undermine our health and rights.

Hear me when I say this: We will never back down when it comes to providing people with the reproductive care they need to live healthy, independent lives.

Planned Parenthood has been around for more than 100 years, and we plan on being around for at least 100 more.

But this rule creates program requirements that will make it impossible for health care providers to provide comprehensive, ethical health care. Planned Parenthood and many other providers would be unable to continue participating in the program because of our commitment to patient care. It will block patients from seeing the Planned Parenthood nurses and doctors they trust.

Sign the petition now to commit to helping defend access to reproductive health care! >>

ADD YOUR NAME

In the days and weeks to come, we will continue working to ensure that everybody has access to the care they need. That's just what we do here at Planned Parenthood — and I'm glad you're here with us in this important work.

Sincerely,

Dr. Leana Wen, President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America

The January Events

I attended the Walk for Life in Balboa Park January 21. We walked a mile around a section of the Park near Sixth and Laurel, and there were some tables from about forty local organizations there. I recognized people from Life Perspectives, 40Days for Life, and Culture of Life Family Services. There were a few speakers at the event, including a couple of post-abortive women. There was also the annual vigil at Grape and Harbor the next day, but I left early because of the combination of heavy rain and lower back problems.

I've often felt divisiveness has been a major reason why pro-life hasn't achieved many victories, and have discussed it here and here. It continues to raise its ugly head, as I found out a few days ago.

I've run a few pro-life pages on Facebook over the years, among them Pro-Life Discussions. We had disagreements with one of the editors over the vaccines, and had to get rid of her. Somehow she was able to get reinstated, not as editor, but as admin, and in that position she busted the rest of usdown to editor, including those who were running the page practically since its inception. It was a stab in the back that Pro-life has never needed.

Life Choices Poway fundraiser

I attended the Life Choices Poway fundraiser last Thursday.  David Daleiden, who helped expose Planned Parenthood's sale of fetal tissue and organs, was on of the speakers, and at the end of the event they gave a tribute to Bob Sheridan, who founded Life Choices.

In my last post, I mentioned that I didn't feel I could go to the 40 Minutes for Life vigil anymore with the move to Vista.  Apparently others have felt that way, because I found out at the fundraiser that they're no longer having that.

I've tried to go to the Saturday morning vigils in El Cajon as much as I can.  I probably won't be able to go June 4, as they're having a memorial service for my neighbor Prudence, who passed away following lung cancer and heart failure.  The main reason I had made plans to move to Lakeside was to facilitate getting away from a boss I knew I needed to get away from.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to do this before he "got" me.  Prudence more than anyone had made the sense of defeat bearable.

Spring 40 Days for Life

Well it's the end of another 40 Days for Life Spring Campaign.  It wasn't that active, and it officially ended Sunday, March 20.  I've always considered it to end with the Good Friday Stations of the Cross in San Diego, which was on March 25 this year.

I've unfortunately had to stop going to the 40 Minutes for Life every fourth Sunday at 7 pm.  With the move from San Marcos to Vista getting down and back is much more difficult from Lakeside.  I'm pretty bummed about this, because a couple years ago I had a boss who went out of his way to keep me from going to pro-life events.  AFAIK he didn't know I was into that, but about the only days he would have me work were days I specifically asked off.  I was mentioning to a couple of co-workers that I was looking elsewhere, and maybe it got back to him, idk, but a day or two later he unexpectedly called me in on a day when I wasn't really up for working, and it affected my performance that night. As a result I had to look for work with the stigma of being unemployed, and by the time I found another job and was starting to get the hang of it some of my doctors were having questions about my health.

My dad's last day

As usual, I attended the 40 Minutes for Life vigil in San Marcos. There's also a possibility I may be working for GrubHub in July, though I have a couple of doctor's appointments.

I've mentioned elsewhere that I lost my dad in 2009 to a very severe form of Parkinson's disease that doesn't respond to the medication Parkinson's normally responds to. I recently found out some details of my dad's passing that weren't pretty, though I'd read enough to have had a good idea. He had gone into septic shock, possibly because of mesenteric necrosis, and had been rushed to the hospital.

I'd made the mistake of not visiting him that day. My back was bothering me, and the chairs at the nursing home were quite uncomfortable, and I was scheduled to work that night. From what I'd read he was pretty much out of it, and I didn't feel it would have been productive to visit him that particular day. Any other day that might have been the right call. My sister Catherine was the only one who was there that night. Dad deserved better. As for my back, I found out after he died that I had an old compression fracture of one of my vertebrae.

Concerning contraceptive mentality

I recently attended the closing prayer vigil for the 40 Days for Life campaign in La Mesa, and there was a reception afterwards at a friend's house.  There was talk about how today's contraceptive mentality has paradoxically contributed to the abortion tragedy.  This may or may not be the case, but focusing on this concern can alienate those who see abortion as the taking of a human life, but happen to use birth control methods as part of their sex lives.  There has been concern about whether some contraceptive methods can be abortive at times, which I've discussed elsewhere in my blog.

40 minutes for Life, plus other things.

I took part in the 40 minutes for Life vigil at the Planned Parenthood clinic at the corner of Twin Oaks and Craven in San Marcos.  It just happens to be across the street from San Marcos State University.  I had to leave early, but I'll try to stay longer next time.  This activity was inspired by the 40 Days for Life vigils that take place twice a year, and takes place the last Sunday of the month.

This has been a rotten month.  On May 2, our cat was unexpectedly run over.  It was in a mobile home park, not the busy street.   A week later, my mom succumbed to angiosarcoma, which was drowning her lungs with fluid.  After we took her home from the hospital we had hospice care set up for her at home, where the hospice nurse had my sister Elizabeth give her the pain and sedative medications.  That was very hard on Elizabeth, and she was wondering if she was doing the right thing.  I asked on a Facebook support group for rare diseases if it was normal in hospice for the nurse to have the family members give these medications.  Someone on that group replied that it wasn't, but things developed too quickly for that answer to do any good.  My mom died the next day.  We had the funeral at St. Kieran's Church on the 18th, and a get-together afterwards.  We'll be having a private ceremony in a couple weeks where we'll place her ashes next to my dad's.

Some news

Mom will see her doctor tomorrow morning because she had some bleeding from her breast.   She has had a rare form of angiosarcoma that sometimes affects women with a history of breast cancer.   We were going to take her to the emergency room, but my sister Elizabeth cleaned her up and found the bleeding didn't seem as extensive as we first thought, so she'll be seeing her doctor in the morning around 8.  I'll try to keep everyone posted.

More on the need for pro-life unity

I attended the 40th anniversary for Roe v. Wade vigil at the corner of Grape and Harbor again this year. There weren’t quite as many people as there have been the past few years, possibly because there was a Walk for Life a few days earlier, which I unfortunately didn’t feel I could attend. As usual, people driving by honked, in some cases as a show of support, others as hostility. We had a few people screaming “pro-choice” and from one car they shouted obscenities.

This makes it all the more reprehensible when pro-lifers belittle one of their own, but this has happened, and both liberal and conservative pro-lifers are guilty of this.

In an earlier post I mentioned having run into a couple of friends, Sue and Tim House. They were at this rally, and I thought I saw someone else there, someone who treated me rather badly many years ago. (at the time, it didn't help that I'd just read literature that the Pill might be abortive.)  There were others like her, and I eventually left pro-life for a few years because of people like that. For better or worse during my absence the movement became much more reactionary.

Re: Protest Event Thursday evening

We took part in a vigil to protest Planned Parenthood's 49th annual fundraising dinner at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel on Park and Harbor Drive by the bay.  There were a bit more people this time than the last time I was there (though not as many as had been at the "Cocktails for Choice" dinner near 30th and Upas).  Roger Lopez, Pat Hansen, and Elena di Ventra were there along with about forty others.  Sue and Tim Houze, who I knew years ago, were there, I'd last run into them at USD a few months ago.  We held up a lot of the graphic signs.  One of my favorite signs is the "Abortion Kills Children" sign, which has no pictures.  Here's an interesting picture I saw on Facebook.

Mom will be getting back the results of her biopsy next Monday to see if her angiosarcoma has returned.  They had earlier checked for masses with ultrasound, but they still want to do this.

In the news, Chinese human rights activist Chen Guangcheng has told the Associated Press that his situation is dangerous and American officials and friends have been blocked from seeing him, and even beaten up when they tried to visit him.  Chen is the blind activist who has called attention to China's forced abortion policy, where pregnant women who already have a child are arrested, restrained, and forced to undergo mandatory abortions, regardless of how far along they are. I wonder if we shouldn't go back to calling that country "Red China".

The screening of "October Baby"

I attended a screening of October Baby at USD earlier tonight.  Sarah Rigby, one of the actresses in the movie, told us about her role in the movie and an abortion she had years ago.  Claire Culwell, a woman who survived an abortion attempt, also spoke.  Unfortunately I felt I had to leave because I was getting kind of tired, and I had to drive back to El Cajon at night.

Mom was at the doctor having some of her old surgery wounds cleared up (seems like she's always doing that).  She'll have a biopsy done soon to see if there's a recurrence of her angiosarcoma.  Earlier an ultrasound hadn't detected anything unusual, but they're doing this procedure to further check on things.

Some news items: Westchester legislators are considering creating a 25-foot buffer zone around clinics.

In Boise, Idaho a crisis pregnancy clinic is operating right next to a Planned Parenthood clinic.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has ordered closed two abortion facilities that had a history of public safety violations.

LifeNews has posted an editorial about sex-selection abortions.

The 40 Days for Life Closing Ceremony

I attended the closing ceremony for the 40 Days for Life program.  Roger Lopez and Gene Villinski ran the ceremony along with Vicki Whitmire, Trippy Seelig, and Bishop Flores.  I also saw Elena di Ventra and Timmerie Millington, both of whom have worked on the project in the past.  Timmerie has a few blogs on pro-life activities.  I also saw Pat Hansen, Barbara Sheddy, and a few others from the vigils.  A post-abortive woman from Silent No More spoke of how many women aren't able to forgive themselves after an abortion; it hits close to home, but not for the reason the reader might think.  When I was younger my dad and I were close, but as we grew older a number of things went terribly wrong.  Now my mom has had a recurrence of angiosarcoma; they may know in April whether the gleevec has helped.

The next pro-life activity will be the Pro-Life Stations of the Cross, which I also did last year.

Other news:  Planned Parenthood is building a $6.5 million facility in Fort Worth, Texas.  A contractor walked out after learning the project was for a Planned Parenthood building.

A Florida dad relates that he wanted his then-girlfriend to have an abortion in 1964 when he was 19, and now thanks his lucky stars that it was illegal at the time.

The start of 40 Days for Life

I went to the 40 Days for Life Kickoff vigil in El Cajon last night.  There were I guess about 40 people there including a few regulars.  I also went to the kickoff vigil in Miramar earlier tonight.as well, and there were I think about 60 people. Roger Lopez and Dr. Delgado were among the speakers. LifeNews and LifeSiteNews have also covered the start of the campaign.  I was away from pro-life for far too long, but at the same time pro-life often seems empty now with my dad gone these past few years.  I try to remember a prayer verse which goes, "There's nothing that destroys more life than abortion."

My mom is back from the nursing home and is receiving Gleevec as chemotherapy.  She also just got back from a trip to Santa Barbara with my two sisters and my cousin.  She's often had high blood pressure,  but it's been lower than usual. Her systolic is 150, but her diastolic is in the 40s.  She'll be seeing her doctor Thursday.

National Review Online published an editorial entitled Mandatory Abortion Coverage? which discussed, among other things, the limitations on the ability of contraception to reduce abortions.  Among the points made were that among low-income co-habiting teens, the failure rate for birth control pills was 48.4% and 71.7% for condoms.  The high failure rate may be in part due to the low educational level of many people in this income bracket, but another point made was that if one is only 3 hours late with progestin-only pills emergency contraception is advised for unprotected intercourse.  In addition, out of 23 studies not one showed that the availability of emergency contraception did anything to reduce the number of abortions.

People who've been following this blog may notice a new picture.  I'm the guy in the middle with the dark shirt, My parents are the ones seated, and you can also see my two sisters and their respective husbands, and my nephew.  Mom has been released from the nursing home and is expected to begin treatment with the Gleevec soon.

Jan 22 vigil + some news items

There was a pretty good turnout at the candlelight vigil on Grape and Harbor tonight.  In addition to the main body of participants at one corner, there were a few who crossed the lights to hold signs on the other side of the streets.  I remembered the quarters for the parking meters, and also had a jacket for when it got cold.  There were quite a few familiar faces there, Pat Hansen, Roger Lopez, and Fr. Nabil, as well as the Bradels and a few others.  I just found out some people from the Facebook page Pro-Lifers Stand Together attended the vigil.

On a personal note my mom is currently in the same nursing home where my dad was at a few years ago.  She's recovering from an infection that occurred as a result of some skin grafts to remove some cancerous growths.  They found a few more and don't think they can remove any more skin; they're going to give her a drug called Gleevec once the infection has healed.  This drug does wonders for a certain type of leukemia, but I don't know whether it will help with her cancer, a form of angiosarcoma.  We're hoping she'll be released from the nursing home in a week or so; she's much more lucid than my dad was during his time there.

Some news items:

Planned Parenthood will be merging some of its clinics in Michigan.

Blog writers at the anti-abortion gang and Live Action, among others, have commented on the hideous matter of sex-selective abortions, where couples abort a baby simply for being the wrong sex (usually female).  Way to go, women's rights groups!

Live Action also relays a report by the Chicago Tribune that some abortion centers have gone 15 years without an inspection, while Jill Stanek reports on two botched abortions where they only had one gurney available, and so they had to take out the second patient in a wheelchair.  Safe, legal??

The pervasiveness of abortion

There's a group on Facebook called Pro-lifers Talking About Non-Abortion Related Things.  It was intended as a means to allow pro-lifers the chance to "take a break" from the battle to save the pre-born, but there were a couple of threads dealing with dating and relationships that did evolve into a discussion of abortion. It's a closed group, so unless you're a member you'll have to take my word for this, which only goes to show how unavoidable the issue is. Life News and Live Action have also reported on attempts by the pro-choice side to trivialize abortion for which I in all honesty can't find words to describe.  The reader will have to check out the links.

Some unwelcome personal developments

In an earlier post on my blog I described how my dad succumbed to a neurological disorder called multiple system atrophy. Now comes news that my mom has had a recurrence of angiosarcoma, a type of cancer that arises in blood and lymph vessels.  They're going to do a scan to see if the recurrence is localized or not, but they described it as a "glimmer of hope".  It comes on top of my having to take time off from work after being diagnosed with shingles, and the restaurant where I've been working being re-located while I was still on sick leave.  I got Mom a Blackmore's Night CD for Christmas because she always listens to a Celtic music program.  The last Christmas present I gave Dad was a reaching device to help pick up objects without having to bend over.  I'd actually gotten that for both of them, but Dad made more use of it in his final months before going to the nursing home.

An update, December 15:

They did the scan and did not find metastases in any vital organs, just in the skin.  They're going to remove the skin and replace it with a graft on Jan. 4.

Some news items

Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sibelius had nixed an effort by the Food and Drug Administration to make Plan B available to girls of any age, and the Associated Press reports that President Obama has supported his secretary's decision.  Whatever we may think of Sibelius or Obama, this was definitely the right thing to do. If Plan B were available on the shelf, all sexually active teens would have to do to avoid talking to their doctor would be to buy Plan B on a regular basis.  If there's cause for concern on the health risks of prescription birth control, what would routine use of Plan B do?

Speaking of Planned Parenthood, seven of its former employees have accused the abortion giant of misuse of government funds and failing to act on instances where statutory rape or coercion was suspected.

In other news, a 19-year-old Houston man who wanted his pregnant girlfriend to have an abortion has been charged in her death.

A lawsuit filed by some nurses over being forced to assist in abortions is headed back to court earlier than expected.
